REV. FR. VINCE ONESI
Parish Priest of St. Peter Chanel
My name is Father Vince Costa 'Onesi. I was born on 3 May 1968 in Hihifo, Niuatoputapu, (Tonga), raised in Niuatoputapu, together with my two sisters and four brothers. I attended the State Primary School in Hihifo. My secondary schools, Niuatoputapu High School and 'Api Fo'ou College, are Catholic Schools on the main island of Tongatapu. When I finished school I went to work as a seaman for nearly ten years. At the end of 1999 I left my job on the ship to discern more clearly my vocation to the priesthood. I contacted the Diocese, in Palmerston North and in 2002 I entered Holy Cross Seminary, Ponsonby, Auckland, to do my studies. On 13th of December 2008 Bishop Peter Cullinane, bishop of the Diocese of Palmerston North, ordained me to the Sacred Order of the Priesthood at Saint Peter Chanel Church, Hastings. After my ordination I was appointed as assistance priest to Hastings Pastoral Area and lived at Sacred Heart Parish Hastings. On the 2nd of October 2011 I was appointed to be the Administrator for Saint Peter Chanel Parish. Now, I am still working at Saint Peter Chanel Parish as a Parish Priest. I enjoy my ministry to the people of God in this area. And I appreciate their help, their prayers and their friendship to me. My favorite saint is Saint Peter Chanel! And I love watching rugby with a cold beer!!. Sometimes I go fishing and I have my own vegetable garden behind the presbytery. I accept my responsibilities from Bishop Charles Drennan to serve the people and the schools of this area. Being a priest is the fulfillment of my childhood dream. It is a deeply rewarding life for me to work together with the people of God.
