Sacred Heart
425 Heretaunga Street East, Hastings
Sacred Heart Church in Hastings was designed by Paris Magdalinos and opened in 1996 after the previous church, a cherished wooden building designed by George Sollitt, was destroyed by fire on Father’s Day, 6 September 1992. The original Gothic‑style timber church had been a long‑standing landmark in the parish, and its loss was deeply felt by the community.
In its place, the new church was built in the Spanish Mission style, reflecting a spirit of renewal and continuity of faith. The present church was officially opened on 16 March 1996 and continues to serve the Hastings Catholic community. The Parish Office and Mission Centre are located on the same site, providing space for parish administration and community gatherings.
