St Peter Chanel

817 Gordon Road, Raureka, Hastings

St Peter Chanel (SPC) Church was established in 1966 to serve the growing Catholic community in Hastings West. The first Masses were initially celebrated in local school chapels while the church building and presbytery were being completed. The new church building was blessed and opened in September 1966. Over the decades, SPC has continued to grow and evolve, with the parish hall opening in 1998 to support community life and ongoing internal improvements to the worship space.

The church is named after Saint Peter Chanel, the first martyr of Oceania. A French Marist priest, he was martyred on Futuna in 1841 for his faithful witness to Christ and later canonised. His life and sacrifice continue to inspire Catholics throughout the Pacific.
